Dr. Marjorie R. Hendler Scholarship for Excellence and Passion in Teaching

This scholarship will be awarded to a student who teaches beyond the test: he or she prepares lessons that are creative, innovative and fun. This student loves children’s literature, and inspires in children a joy of reading, which will translate into a lifetime of new worlds opened. He or she is sensitive to the day and age in which we teach, ensuring that all materials reflect gender equality, blended families, and multicultural awareness. This scholarship is established in honor of Dr. Marjorie Hendler, a faculty member at Queens College. Dr. Hendler has extensively researched issues related to sex role stereotyping in children’s literature, and has developed courses in multicultural literature and myths, fables and folk tales. She is known for instilling her passion for teaching in her students, with a goal of fostering a love of learning in each new generation of students who they in turn teach.
